| What Is Chiropractic | |
|
There are many reasons why people choose to go to a chiropractor; however the majority of reasons seem to revolve around neck pain, headaches and low back pain. While chiropractic can be used when these symptoms are present, if you only seek chiropractic care when you are experiencing one of these you are really only receiving approximately 1% of the benefit of chiropractic. Ruehle Family Chiropractic focuses on the other 99% - your performance. When people hear the word performance, they often think of various different things. Some picture Jerry Rice catching a game winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana. Others will remember when they saw their favorite band put on an amazing show. It may be pretty simple to see how these individuals could greatly benefit from chiropractic care on a regular basis in order to perform at the top of their game but how does that help you and I? While you may not need to avoid 250 pound linebackers or entertain thousands of screaming fans for a living, you still need to perform at your best in other areas of your life. How is your performance at work? How about in your personal relationships? What about your income? Is it as high as it could possibly be? Are you performing as well as you can in all areas of your life or is there some room for improvement? If you are like most people there is at least some room for improvement! |

Maybe there is one area of your life that could use a little "boost" but how can chiropractic help? Chiropractic deals with every level of human performance. This is the case because every level of human performance is controlled by your body’s chemistry. This is pretty easy to consider since many times we hear that if our body chemistry is a little bit off our performance will suffer. We are constantly hearing about people who are not as healthy as they can be because their blood sugar is a little too high or a little too low. Not too long ago we heard all about professional baseball players who attempted to alter their body chemistry by taking performance enhancing drugs. Have you ever been guilty of altering your performance? Of course you have! Many of us have ever felt a little bit tired and decided to have a cup of coffee or possibly a Coca-Cola to help keep us awake! Why do we do this? Of course the answer is that both of these beverages contain caffeine which is a stimulant. This stimulant will alter our body chemistry and thus change our performance. As you can see, our performance is directly linked to our chemistry. But what controls our chemistry?
All of the chemicals that we need to live are produced by the numerous cells of the body. It is the job of these cells to make the right chemicals at the right place and right time so that your body chemistry will be in balance, allowing you to perform up to your potential. A logical question comes forward at this point and time, “How do these cells know how much of a particular chemical should be produced?” The truth is they don’t. Much like a sports team relies on a head coach to set up the game plan and call various plays throughout the game, the body depends on the nervous system, consisting of the brain, spinal cord and all of the nerves of the body. The brain will determine exactly what chemical needs to be made and in what amount and will send that information over the spinal cord and nerves to the cells of the body. Much like the coach telling the team what play to run, the brain will let the cells know exactly how to function. Once this information is received, the cells will make the chemicals in the proper portions, your body chemistry will normalize and you will perform as well as you can. At this point it sounds as if this brain and spinal cord are pretty important doesn’t it? They are! The brain and spinal cord are so important that they are actually surrounded by bone. In fact, they are the only organ system that is fully surrounded by bone. This serves to protect them from any harsh injury. The brain is of course protected by the skull and the spinal cord is protected by 24 individual bones (vertebrae). While these bones serve their purpose extremely well, they are not “fool proof”. Since these 24 vertebrae are individual segments and are movable, they can occasionally move out of their proper position and impede the transmission of information between the brain and the cells of the body. This is where the chiropractor enters the picture. The chiropractor will find the vertebrae that is not in its proper position and perform an adjustment, thereby moving the bone back to its proper position. When this occurs, communication is once again restored with the cells on the other end. Since the cells are receiving the proper information, they are able to produce chemicals in the right amounts at the right place and right time and when this occurs your performance has no choice but to increase. As mentioned earlier, chiropractic deals with every level of human performance. Regardless if you are an athlete, musician, banker, mother, or a student you deserve to perform up to your potential.
